Flynn and Josh

Introduce yourself! (name age, where you live, are you studying, any plans for the future..)

Flynn:
I’m Flynn, I'm 18 years old and I’m from Kilmore, Victoria. I'm not studying this year, so I guess I’m taking a gap year? I guess. I’ve been at RetroStar since November 2024.

Josh:
Yo, what’s up, I’m recovering from surgery. I’m Josh, the streets call me Big J. I live in Ascot Vale right by the river. I am not studying, because I just got back from a Canada trip and I plan on going back for another winter season. I’ve been at RetroStar since August 2024.

Do you see vintage fashion as a part of your future? Is it something you want to pursue as a career or is it a hobby?

Flynn:
I already pursue fashion as a hobby. I wouldn't say vintage fashion necessarily. I try not to limit myself, I occasionally go thrifting but I do prefer curated, archival stores with brands I already like. Fashion could definitely be a bigger part of my future. It would be really cool to see myself with a store of my own one day. It’s kind of like a pipe dream, but it could be really cool.

Josh:
I wouldn’t pursue it as a career, no. I just like to dress cool.

What is your favourite piece you’ve bought from RS? Is there anything you missed out on and you wish you bought?

Flynn:
I have a few! I can’t really narrow it down. My favourite would be this really nice red Adidas tracksuit jacket that I copped. It just looks really cool. I think there was this one time Ofri bought a really, really tough Ralph Lauren sweater. I have actually bought everything I’ve wanted from RetroStar, so there actually aren’t many pieces I missed out on. Anything I see here, I just buy.

Josh:
Probably most of my jewellery. Half of my jewellery is from RetroStar. We just have so many cool bracelets, necklaces and cool rings. SO many cool rings. Gemma always takes the good stuff. She took this Polo hoodie I’d love to steal.

Who has the best style at RetroStar?

Flynn:
I can’t say Josh and I can’t say me. Imagine if I did say Josh and I was just plugging him… I don’t wanna do that.. I don’t wanna give him that. I’ll say… either you (Lulu) or Charlotte. [Lulu] if [she was] still working here in the store, but Charlotte because she’s here currently. [Lulu] used to lowkey put some crazy shit on bro and I was really rocking with it.

Josh:
I don’t really know if I’m allowed to say myself, so I’m gonna say Gemma. She’s got banging style.

What are some of your favourite memories from working here?

Flynn:
Just meeting the other employees here. The Christmas party every year is always kind of kooky. Definitely hanging out with people after work, or randomly seeing a friend come into the store and being able to help them. It’s always a nice surprise.

Josh:
Not gonna lie… Every day with Jen (our boss) is a good day. But also, I love flicking rubber bands at people. I remember one time I flung a rubber band at Mia and it landed on her head.

Who inspires you fashion wise?

Flynn:
I don’t know if I could pin it on a singular person. I take inspiration from a lot of people. I go on Instagram a lot; rappers, Melbourne people. I’ll always look at someone in the store and be like “damn” and try to base something off of that.

Josh:
I don’t really know. I’m not too much on social media anymore, so I just see cool stuff, I buy it and make it work. A bunch of anime characters; Ichigo and Aizen from Bleach. Trunks from Dragon Ball. And of course, Lil B, Base God.

What music are you queueing at the desk?

Flynn:
Nine Vicious, Uzi, Carti, a little bit of Nettspend, xaviersobased. I can’t always listen to them because they’re so explicit. I’ll sprinkle them throughout the queue.

Josh:
I’m queuing everything. Minecraft music, slowdive, Cocteau Twins, yaego is banging. Also some occasional Team sleep, Sevendust and Tool.

If you could invade anyone’s closet dead or alive who is it …

Flynn:
I don’t wanna say Playboi carti, but I think I might. He has a crazy curation of stuff. I remember this one fit that he wore at SummerSmash or RollingLoud; it was a Bape hoodie with the diamond lollipop. If I could have anyone’s closet it would be his. Even jewellery wise he’s got a crazy collection… Always iced out.

Josh:
Sam Norris. @freesami on Instagram.

What are your top three holy grail pieces?

Flynn:
The Jeremy scott black hightop 3.0s with the wing. Anything by Kim Kruger probably the zip. He does some crazy crazy stuff. The brand is owned by this guy called Burberry Erry. He goes on tour with Carti as a hype man. My final grail is my own Playboi Carti Supreme tee. When he did the collaboration I knew I needed to get it. I paid way too much for it, like $380? Then I went to another store the same day and it was so much cheaper. I wasn’t cut because I was just happy I had the t-shirt.

Josh:
Balenciaga striker boots in black. Carol Christain Poell tornado boots. The gloves that Edward Scissor Hands wears.

What is your favourite thing in your wardrobe?

Flynn:
It would be the supreme bomber jacket i’m wearing in the photos. I got in Japan and I’ve worn it so much already. It’s really warm, super comfy and one of my favourite brands. My other favourite thing are these Margiela futures, but they’re not actually Margiela futures. They are by this brand called Grimy kids and it’s Molly Santana merch, with Molly written on the lip.

Josh:
Probably my Jaded London Jeans that I always wear and will be wearing in the photoshoot.
